It was Pacho’s Fault. | Fue culpa de Pacho.

Pacho, a Wayúu descent was our 4X4 driver and we had a hard time trusting him. Why? The 1st day after watching the sunset at the desert, he started the SUV with a suspicious clicking sound. Yep, Pachito forgot to put gas. Thing is, this region doesn’t have gas stations. People sell it in 2-liter bottles at the side of the road, road that we had left behind 2hrs before entering Cabo.  Pacho tried to tow the SUV with another, but that only left us with no bumper as it FELL …

Cabo de la Vela, Colombia

I remember when reading “Love in the Time of Cholera”, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, that he sent the main characters on a long dangerous journey to Cabo de la Vela, a remote and magic place that I tried to picture many times in my head. Now, standing here, I can only say that the hard reality resembles the wildest imagination! #magicrealism While in Cabo you normally have 2 accommodation options: a hammock or a bed. I opted for the hammock not only because I thought sleeping under the stars with a …

I’m Soy into Hong Kong. | Soya Hong Kong.

What I like about cities is that everything is king size, the beauty and the ugliness. These Banyans trees are found everywhere in Hong Kong, growing in parks, street planters and even between the cracks of stone walls. Their imposing presence defines de cityscape. . Its quite magical, seeds carried by the wind or dropped by birds find their way into cracks. As the tree grows, its roots plunge dozens of meters into the soil behind the wall!Respect for bayans runs deep in south Chinese culture. They are considered to …

A story-upon-story of windows and walls | Una historia sobre historia de ventanas y paredes.

The massive influx of refugees postwar led to a severe housing shortage in Hong Kong. As a result, the government launched a public accommodation program for low-income residents. The “Monster Building”, (named by locals) along with other housing properties became densely populated creating a concrete beehive. (9 mts apartments) This used to be somewhat a hidden gem for night photographers (even after the transformers movie). It was never intended to turn into a hipstagram/tourist spot. I heard the public has since been banned from taking photos of the iconic tower …

Golden Gai, Shinjuku

I visited the Ace’s bar, actually twice during my trip. The 1st time, I sat by the bar, asked for a Yebisu beer and for the story behind a Colorado’s plate that was casually hanging by the liquor bottles. The owner/bartender, Tsuyoshi smiled. He then told me that he opened this place after returning from a four-year stint in Colorado. He thought if he’d moved back to Japan, he’d have to take a piece of CO with him. So, he opened his bar in the Golden Gai area and hanged …
